Its research profile diverges from Semax's — Selank is studied primarily in the context of anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects and its influence on GABAergic signaling, the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter system in the brain. Some research has also examined Selank's effects on peripheral markers like cytokine expression, reflecting its origin as an immunomodulatory peptide.
The distinction matters for research design: Semax and Selank are often mentioned together because of their shared origin in the same research tradition, but they're being studied for functionally different things — one for neurotrophic and cognitive effects, the other for stress and anxiety-related signaling.
DSIP: Sleep Architecture Research
Delta sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) is named for its originally observed association with delta-wave sleep, the deep, slow-wave stage of sleep architecture. Despite the name, DSIP's mechanism isn't fully settled in the literature — later research has explored roles beyond sleep alone, including stress response modulation and effects on certain hormonal axes. It remains one of the more mechanistically ambiguous peptides in active research, which is part of what keeps it an area of ongoing interest rather than a settled topic.
Why This Category Resists Generalization
Unlike, say, GHRH analogs, which share a clear common receptor target, cognitive research peptides don't share a single unifying mechanism. Comparing Semax and DSIP is closer to comparing two unrelated research questions that happen to fall under the same shelf label than comparing two variations on the same theme. Researchers working in this space generally need to treat each compound on its own mechanistic terms.
